Theatre Nohgaku

Theatre Nohgaku, or “TN” was born of a shared passion for the classical noh drama of Japan and a belief in its vitality for contemporary audiences around the world. It was founded in 2000 by Richard Emmert and a group of English-speaking performers trained in the demanding techniques of noh. A number of master Japanese noh actors and musicians have worked with TN on specific projects, including full performances of traditional Japanese noh. TN has worked in partnership with artists and institutions on four continents, including several noh institutions in Japan. In the past year alone, TN and its partners have given performances and provided training in Japan, the U.S., the UK, and France. Theatre Nohgaku’s work is gradually increasing in critical recognition, having received favorable reviews in American, Australian, British, Chinese and Japanese press, and among both Japan-based and international scholars of noh.
